What Is Back-Set Platinum?

Back-Set Platinum is a molecular concrete remover that works by breaking the ionic bond holding Portland cement to surfaces — dissolving it rather than just loosening it. This acid-free mechanism eliminates the primary hazards associated with traditional concrete removers: no hydrochloric acid, no toxic fume generation, no acid burns to workers or equipment surfaces. The result is a safer, more practical daily-use product for ready-mix drum washing, chute cleaning, hand tool maintenance, and surface restoration.

How to Apply Back-Set Platinum to Ready-Mix Trucks

For ready-mix truck drum and chute cleaning, apply Back-Set Platinum directly to hardened cement deposits. The molecular dissolver will penetrate the buildup — dwell time varies based on the thickness and age of the cement layer. Once dissolved, rinse thoroughly with water. For heavy buildup, a second application may be appropriate. For small hand tools, submerge the encrusted item in a plastic pail of Back-Set Platinum for 20–45 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Application is straightforward and requires no specialized equipment beyond standard chemical handling PPE. Back-Set Platinum can be applied via brush, spray, or direct pour depending on the surface and access. Always apply to a dry surface for best results.

Back-Set Platinum works best when applied with one of our Mega-Foam Systems. The system draws the dissolver directly from the shipping container and applies it through a hose and trigger gun wand, eliminating premixing, reducing waste, and increasing product dwell time on the encrusted surface. The system starts and stops on demand by opening and closing the trigger wand valve. Back-Set Platinum can also be applied with a general garden sprayer or by using the bucket and brush method.

Before application, make sure the surface is cool to touch. Using the Mega-Foam unit, apply the product from the bottom working your way up a section at a time. The foam should cling to the surface. Once the section application is complete, let the product dwell for 10–45 minutes depending on ambient temperature and buildup thickness. (Back-Set Platinum may be left on the surface overnight.) Once the product has turned into a white, powdered sugar look, re-apply keeping the encrusted area saturated.

Product exposure time is directly proportional to cement thickness. As the cement changes to a mushy, cottage cheese-like consistency, rinse the entire surface — preferably with high-pressure (500–3000 psi) cold water — from the bottom working up. Regular water pressure from a normal hose will also work sufficiently.

After the truck was soaked with Back-Set Platinum, a pressure washer removed the dissolved concrete with no damage to the truck.

Step-by-Step Application Instructions

• Completely saturate the area of hardened concrete to be removed with Back-Set Platinum via sprayer or soft brush. (Do Not Dilute.) Concrete will turn white upon contact, then darken. If allowed to evaporate, white residue will appear. Do not rinse — re-apply Back-Set Platinum to reactivate as needed until concrete is softened.
• Allow Back-Set Platinum to penetrate for 10–15 minutes. After 10–15 minutes, re-apply Back-Set Platinum to the same area. Keep the surface wet with Back-Set Platinum. Concrete will begin to soften and pull away from the cleaned surface (approximately 20–30 minutes).
• Rinse thoroughly with water pressure. On extra thick buildup, repeat cleaning directions until buildup is soft.
• Do not clean with any type of product when temperatures are below freezing or in extreme heat of direct sun. Best cleaning results are obtained when air and surface temperatures are 40°F to 80°F. (Hot surface temperature may cause scorching.)
• Always test prior to beginning full-scale cleaning operation. Testing should confirm cleaning effectiveness on each type of surface being cleaned. Test also to determine desired surface contact time and potential for adverse reactions. Allow test panels to dry thoroughly before evaluating final appearance and results.

Directions for Small Hand Tool Cleaning

For cleaning small parts and hand tools, use a small plastic dip vat or plastic pail to submerge the encrusted item for at least 20–45 minutes. Remove the item and rinse well with cold water.
